CWONJ Prepares Members
For a Visit From OSHA

MONROE, NJ - The Car Wash Operators of New Jersey (CWONJ) prepared its members for an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) audit at its Fall Membership Meeting here, November 8, at the Crowne Plaza. The meeting, which also included an update on the associationÕs Groupon program by board member Scott Freund, attracted 60 to the dinner meeting.
ÒThe material our two speakers presented tonight was invaluable to our members,Ó said CWONJ President Gerry Barton. ÒThis type of information is a great example of why you should be a member of the CWONJ.Ó

The nightÕs first speaker, Michael Yarnell, began his career with OSHA in 1974 as an Industrial Hygienist. He has conducted more than 200 independent field enforcement investigations at a variety of industrial and construction worksites. He became a Compliance Assistance Specialist in 2002 where he educates, trains and provides technical advice concerning OSHA standards and regulations. YarnellÕs experience as a federal level officer shed light on what will happen when OSHA comes calling, and what recourses an operator will have and how to approach a visit.

Mark Wadiak, the second speaker, is an assistant director in the NJ Department of Labor & Workforce Development. He oversees the OSHA-PEOSH Consultation and Training Programs and the Mine Safety Education Program. WadiakÕs background includes working as a quality control chemist in the pharmaceutical industry, and working with the US Department of Labor, OSHA, as a Compliance Safety and Health Officer. Wadiak, who is a state representative, is a great resource prior to an OSHA visit. He can access any issues a site may have and work with the operator on rectifying them.

Weehawken, NJ - The Car Wash Operators of New Jersey (CWONJ) boarded the Spirit Cruise Line here on December 8 for a holiday dinner cruise on the Hudson River that featured a spectacular view of New York CityÕs holiday lights. "We wanted to give our members something different and a purely social event this holiday season," said Mike Prudente, CWONJ president. "I think everyone enjoyed themselves and was able to forget about business for a while."

In addition to taking in the sites of the city by cruise boat, the group was also able to view the breathtaking Statue of Liberty illuminated for the holiday. The event, attended by 65, included a dinner buffet, a singing wait staff and plenty of dancing. The Spirit Cruise line features three climate-controlled interior levels and plenty of deck space to take in the panoramic views of the New York skyline.

20th NRCC Hits the Mark!

Ê Despite a sluggish economy and erratic weather patterns attendance numbers at the 20th Northeast Regional Carwash Convention (NRCC), October 19-21, were strong, according to show facilitator Julie Stanton. "We were over 1300, down only slightly from last yearÕs numbers, and we were thrilled with that," she said. "Many other shows in our industry have been down significantly, but we were able to weather the storm and provide our attendees with some great education and a packed show floor."

Ê Terry Powell, of Perry Powell Sign Consultants in Ft. Worth, TX, said the NRCC is by far the best show she exhibits at in this industry. "This show is better than all the rest, including the ICA (International Carwash Association) show. It just has a level of energy and quality buyers that we donÕt always run into in other regions of the country."

Ê To celebrate 20 years as a convention the NRCC board kicked off the event at the Water ClubÕs indoor pool with an intimate cocktail party sponsored by ICS. "It is a great venue to hold an event and one that lends itself to networking and catching up with your fellow operators," said show Co-Chairperson Walt Hartl.

NRCC Most Distinguished Person Award
Also new to this yearÕs show was the addition of an award called the NRCC Hall of Fame Award which was presented to one of the conventionÕs founding members, Ron Bousquet of RandyÕs Car Wash in Medford, MA. Bousquet has poured his blood, sweat and tears into helping make this the premiere regional in the industry. "Ron is so deserving of this award," said Hartl. "He works tirelessly for the NRCC. I couldnÕt think of a more deserving individual to receive our first Hall of Fame Award."

Ê Other award recipients included Tom Hoffman, Jr., of Hoffman Car Wash in Albany, NY, for his efforts battling the interpretation of tax law by the New York State Taxation and Finance Department as it affects in-bay automatic cash transactions. He received the NRCC Association Advocate Award. His brother-in-law and good friend Hartl, received the NRCC Most Distinguished Person Award for his vision with this yearÕs show and for his unyielding work on the NRCC board.

Ê Industry veteran Fred Grauer presented an uplifting keynote titled, "Fiscal Health vs. Physical Health." In addition to taking us through a history of the industry he was able to correlate physical health with the health and prosperity of your business. International Carwash Association incoming President Jeff Gheysens, a former Car Wash Operators of New Jersey (CWONJ president, updated the group on the ICAÕs WaterSaversª program (carwash.org).

Ê Featured seminars included two Early Bird discussions on a variety of industry topics, Customer Loyalty 2.0 which revisited the topic and touched on radio frequency identification technology (RFID), bonus time and unlimited washing. The lineup also included a lively program on Essential Marketing in TodayÕs Society presented by WashIdeasÕ Ryan Carlson. His program took marketing out of the traditional box and focused on the Internet and social networking like Twitter and Facebook.

Ê The show floor included some 230+ booths in 45,000 square feet of exhibit space. Show hours ran from 2:30pm-7:00pm on Tuesday and from 10:30am to 2:30pm on Wednesday.

Ê This yearÕs show, October 18-20, will move to the Trump Taj Mahal on the boardwalk. "This move is significant in many ways," said NRCC board member Suzanne Stansbury. "Our contract is up with the Borgata and they will not be adding any exhibit space in the near future and we are bursting out of our current set up," she said. "By moving the show to an actual convention facility our vendors will have an easier set up and tear down, larger show floor, and the overnight rooms and restaurants are more economical. We will also be able to run concurrent education and give our attendees more for their money," she added. "Also, the Taj has been renovated since we were there seven years ago. ItÕs really lovely (trumptaj.com).

Ê "We are all very excited about the move and think it will bring our show to the next level."

Ê For exhibit information for the 2010 show call Julie Stanton at 800/868-8590 or email infor@nrccshow.com.

CWONJ Contingent Hit a Home Run at Yankee Stadium

About 45 Car Wash Operators of New Jersey (CWONJ) members watched the New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles in a 6 to 4 decision on July 21 in the new, and incredible, $1,020,000,000 stadium. Despite a half-hour rain delay the skies cleared and the mystique and magic of the new Yankee Stadium and its stellar team didnÕt disappoint. From the history at every turn, to the array of food vendors and sea of blue and gray shirts, the day was pretty incredible, according to CWONJ President Mike Prudente, who was responsible for the event. "ItÕs nice to have the association attend this type of an event. And you canÕt beat this stadium and team."

9th Annual Golf Outing in Union

CWONJ Raises $5,000 for ChildrenÕs Specialized Hospital at

UNION, NJ Ñ The Car Wash Operators of New Jersey (CWONJ) again donated proceeds from its annual golf outing, June 8 at Suburban Golf Club, to the ChildrenÕs Specialized Hospital, the largest pediatric rehabilitation healthcare system in the United States. According to association President Mike Prudente, the group raised just over $5,000. "ItÕs really important to give back and our goal is to support this hospital and all the great work it does," he said. "ItÕs easy to give when it is to children who can really use your help."

ChildrenÕs Specialized Hospital is the preeminent provider of rehabilitation for children with special needs, serving children affected by brain injury, spinal cord dysfunction and injury, premature birth, autism, developmental delays, and life-changing illnesses. Children's Specialized has eight sites in New Jersey and treats more than 16,000 children each year. You can learn more about their mission at childrens-specialized.org.

The annual golf event also included a lunch and dinner and 18 holes of golf on the A. W. Tillinghast-designed course. Money was raised for the children through Mulligan sales, a "Beat the Pro" event, a golf club raffle, 50:50 and auction conducted by Prudente. Approximately 75 golfers enjoyed a sunny day on the links.
